Q: Is a One-Look Acting Headshot Session right for me?

We want to make sure that your session is set up for success - that is - to get you opportunities and auditions. Whether you are in film and TV, commercials, or theater, a one-look session may be all you need to boost your career and meet your goals for now.

If any of these resonate with you, then a one-look actor headshot session should probably do the trick!

  1. You are in theater.

    • When actor are doing stage work, one look is almost always enough to provide you with a great set of images. Because you get two shots with your session, you can go home with one smiling shot, and one more theatrical look. When combined with a nice, neutral outfit (I recommend a dark tone or black), your headshots will be versatile enough to audition for many different types of roles, and will last quite a while (normally about 1 year for kids, or 2 years for adults, or until you change your look)

    • Theater actors need a headshot that showcases their professionalism and justifies their expertise. Your headshot will end up in the playbill, possibly posters, definitely digital marketing materials, and often in social media.

    • Our goal during your headshot session is going to be to grab a strong set of headshots that works for all of these things. Often, playbills will print the bio section in black and white, so we will choose a backdrop, lighting, and posing that works well when converted to black and white. The color version will grab attention and help others know that YOU know what you’re doing and are right to be in the role.

    • EXCEPTION - if you audition for radically different types of roles for the stage, you may need a second look. We don’t ever want to appear too “commercial” with a stage-actor headshot, but you may need something slightly more light-hearted if you’re going for roles in production like Hairspray or How the Grinch Stole Christmas, where the roles are whimsical and bright.

Here are some examples of a versatile theater actor headshot similar to what we can capture with your one-look theater headshot session:

2. You need to represent a new type

  • If you’re on your way and your agency feels you should start auditioning for a new type, you may need a quick one-look session to get that new type represented.

Possibly your age range has shifted, allowing for a new type of roles to be considered, or perhaps you have developed as an actor and are ready to expand into new roles.

  • It’s very important that agencies have a type-specific headshot to present to casting directors when they are looking for job opportunities for you. For instance, if all you have for headshots is commercial type headshots, this may prevent you from getting auditions for more dramatic roles. Casting directors like to see a hint of the type usually, but once in a while you can get quite specific if you want to really for for specific types of roles.

Here are some examples of headshots that are more specific to a type so you could audition for more specific roles:

3. You have changed your look. At ALL.

  • If you’ve had a hair cut, color shift, gained or lost weight, or anything else that makes you look different than your current headshot, you are in an emergency - GET A NEW HEADSHOT!

  • I would normally recommend 3 looks if your look has changed for the foreseeable future, but a 1-look session will get you going in a pinch.

4. You need to get started, but need a budget-friendly way to get your foot in the door.

  • If budget is one of your main priorities, it’s completely ok to get started with one look. An agency can work with that! I may recommend purchasing an extra image or two so you can get different expressions and compositions (such as a fully-body or 3/4 shot), but a 1-look actor headshot session is a great option for budget concerns.

If you feel you may need more than one look, head over to the Multiple-Look Headshot Session Ordering Page and choose the headshot session that is right for you!
